Plasma vs LCD Televisions

plasma vs lcdPlasma versus LCD – a fascinating, complex battle indeed! LCD and plasma TVs each have their own characteristics. And the decision about which one you prefer has a lot to do with your personal taste, much like preferring a peanut butter sandwich to a jelly sandwich, or vice versa.

Let us proceed point by point.

Each pixel in a plasma TV is made up of three phosphors – one red, one blue, and one green. They emit light when struck by beams of electrons. The quantity of light emitted depends on the intensity of the electron beam. It is the phosphors themselves that create the light one can see on a plasma screen.

On the other hand, LCD TVs use millions of crystal, which are suspended in a liquid that is sandwiched between transparent panels. A bright florescent light is in place behind this liquid crystal sandwich. The crystals are instructed to either let the light pass or block its passage. Color filters are used to determine color.

As far as size is concerned, both TVs were always thin, and so that question is something of a stalemate. For example, the difference between 3″” and 5″” seems to matter in case of certain models, but becomes almost immaterial when it comes to a large-screen TV.

In terms of the viewing area, however, plasma TVs have always been known for their larger sizes. And that holds true in general. Put in a different way, one will have a greater variety of plasma TVs to choose from when he/she is looking at the big models. But it should be kept in mind that LCD TVs, too, are steadily gaining ground.

Now comes the question of price. For a large-screen plasma TV and a large-screen LCD TV of the same size, the plasma TV would normally cost less. LCD TVs are, however, dropping in price, and it is highly likely that the two will be on equal footing in the price department quite soon. All else being equal, in the plasma vs. LCD TV battle, plasma tends to win on this one for the time being. But the battle goes on.

Shopping Tips For a DVD Recorder

Are you ready to buy a DVD recorder and you are overwhelmed by the tons of brands and specifications to choose from? Then here are some helpful points to consider.

1. The first question you need to answer is “What are you going to do with it?” Usually people buy DVD recorders for two purposes:

- To record TV programs and either keep them after watching them or simply delete them after watching.
– To edit home videos.

dvd recorderIf your main reason for wanting to buy a DVD recorder is to record TV programs, then you will probably go for a digital video recorder with a built-in DVD burner or a DVD recorder with a hard drive. You will need to look for a DVD recorder that has better image and surround sound capture and the ability to record live shows while playing back video content recorded earlier. And
You will definitely, be looking for one that has larger disc drive space. However, if your intention is to edit home videos, then you will probably want to go for one that has a DV input – a firewire port and also good editing functionality.

2. The second question you need to answer is “Will I share my discs with other people?”

- If you plan to use your discs without sharing then you don’t need to worry about this. However, if you are planning to share them, then you need to be aware of formats supported by the DVD recorder. There are 7 formats i.e. DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. Most recorders now support DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW while selected models support the DVD-RAM or Dual-Layer (DL) formats. (“R” refers to write-once discs, “RW” represents rewritable media.) It worth noting that DVD-RAM is not supported by many DVD players and it the most costly.

3. The third question you need to ask is “Will I need to use the recorder for other multi-media purposes?”

- If you are planning to play MP3 and WMA CD’s and to view JPEG’s, then you will have to consider if the DVD recorder supports those file formats.

4. The fourth question is “Are you a technical person?”

- Well some people have no problems getting on with setting up and operating most electrical gadgets, however, some of us are technically challenged at times and that is why you should go for a DVD recorder that is easy to operate. To start, Check out the on-screen menus and the remote control. Good interfaces will guide you through tasks, while bad ones will get in the way. If you are planning to use this for editing, then look at how the recorder organizes scenes for you and look at the steps required to perform basic tasks such as trimming, deleting, and reordering scenes. If the manual is available online, skim its contents to see if it offers clear, detailed explanations of everything related to recording and–especially for home video–editing.

5. Lastly, you need to ask yourself “How much money are you ready to spend?”

- Remember, the most expensive DVD recorder isn’t always the best one for your needs.

TomTom GPS Reciever Revolutionizes the Way the World Looks at GPS Receivers

One question, you may ask yourself, why do you need the TomTom GPS receiver. Isn’t the wired GPS, which you have been using all this time, good enough? To begin with, one hurdle, we all face is with the placing of the wired GPS devices; the device may kick start at record time, and may also find the network automatically, which most devices, though automatic, fail to do without a manual search, but the wired GPS needs to be placed under the open sky. This becomes a real problem when you are on a roadtrip. The dash board of your car may heat up, get dusty, or a pain not to have enough space to lodge the device. Trying to place the device on the floor of the car makes the network go awry. So the only way you can make your wired GPS device function, is by placing it right under the open sky, even if that means having to stop your vehicle every few miles.Sometimes you may even have to stick your device out of the window of a moving car, to catch the signal. Also the wire may not be long enough for such antics. In that case you are reallytoast!

tomtom gpsThe TomTom GPS receiver puts an end to all these woes. All you have to do is turn on your PDA, activate the Bluetooth, and switch the receiver on. This kickstart the GPS

navigation system. You can choose program with which you want to run the receiver. The Tom Tom GPS receiver is compatible with other programs as well, and not just TomTom. To fix a target, enter the address you are looking for, and place the receiver on the dashboard of your car. And this is not all. You can move this receiver anywhere you like. The company specifications say that the operating temperature is between -10 to %2B60 degrees Celsius. But the receiver doesn’t lock up even when exposed to higher temperatures. This is a great feature for a GPS receiver, making TomTom a runaway favorite.

The TomTom GPS receiver revolutionizes the way the world looks at GPS receivers. The Bluetooth-enabled PDA and GPS receiver, is hassle free, with no tangled wires, no open connections, recessed power button, and rounded metal edges, with rubber casing makes it easy to handle, operate and maintain. Even if the receiver slips off the dashboard, the reception of the network is never waslost. Though the TomTom GPS receiver is not as flashy and decked up as most of its counterparts, but it will never fail either in efficiency or accuracy. It can give many a bigger manufacturer, a run for their money, with its performance. The battery of the TomTom GPS receiver, can be replaced, when ever necessary. The TomTom GPS receiver is equipped with a rubber ring, making the body reasonably watertight. This is especially important when it comes to a tracking device. You cannot always predict the climate in which you will have to travel in. a waterproof and heat resistant body, on a GPS receiver, is of utmost importance.

The only downside of the TomTom GPS receiver is that there is no option for adjusting the time. This way the receiver cannot be automatically turned off when not in use. Apart from this, it is hard to come by any real manufacturing or technical defect in the TomTom GPS receiver.

Internet, phone, and TV packages can pay off, but some have snags

Illustration of TV, phone and internet all connected

If hard economic times have you scrambling to trim expenses, relief might be as close as your Internet, phone, and television services.

Intense competition for cable and satellite customers between AT&TU-verse and Verizon FiOS high-speed fiber providers has driven down rates for Internet, phone, and TV combined into bundled services. Bundles of the three services have dropped in price by up to 20 percent in the last year, to as low as $80 a month.

Such rates are ostensibly good only for the first year or two of service. But providers are increasingly reluctant to raise rates after the promotional period, at least in some of the more competitive markets, says Doug Williams, a telecommunications analyst with Forrester Research.
